Residents Discovered the Birds of the Paunacussing Creek
May 2026
Community members of all ages joined the Paunacussing Watershed Association for a peaceful morning bird walk along the Paunacussing Creek led by Diane Smith, Director of Education at Honey Hollow Nature Center. Participants explored the watershed, learned to identify birds by sight and sound, and gained a deeper appreciation for the diverse wildlife that calls our community home.
Status: 🟢 Community Bird Walk successfully completed.
We look forward to offering additional bird walks and nature programs throughout the year. Keep an eye on our Events page for upcoming opportunities.

Birds are among the best indicators of a healthy watershed. Their presence—and the variety of species found throughout the watershed—reflects the quality of local habitats, forests, wetlands, and streams. Community bird walks help connect people with nature while fostering a greater understanding of why protecting these habitats is so important.
Participants had the opportunity to:
• Learn to identify birds by sight and sound
• Discover local bird habitats and seasonal behaviors
• Explore the Paunacussing Creek and surrounding landscape
• Gain a deeper appreciation for local wildlife
• Connect with neighbors who share an interest in nature

Participants followed Diane Smith along the creek as she introduced resident and migratory birds, explained their habitats and seasonal behaviors, and shared practical birding tips. Whether attending their first bird walk or bringing years of experience, everyone left with a greater appreciation for the remarkable diversity of birds found throughout the Paunacussing Watershed.

The Paunacussing Watershed Association extends its sincere thanks to Diane Smith and Honey Hollow Nature Center for sharing their expertise and making this community event such a success. We also thank everyone who joined us in celebrating the natural beauty and wildlife of the Paunacussing Watershed.
